The Sphynx is a result of a natural gene mutation and continues to occur without the aid of breeding, approximately every 15 years.
Canadians began intentionally trying to reproduce or breed in the mutation in order to establish the Sphynx (Canadian Hairless) breed, as early as the 60's.
The result was a hairless or mildly fuzzy cat, with a triangular shaped head, strong body and a wonderfully, affectionate, active, intelligent personality.
Although hairless, the skin on a Sphynx comes with the same colors and patterns that a cat with fur would have. When very young and even on into full adulthood, these cats need to be protected from cold drafts and direct sunlight as they are an easy target for sunburn and sunstroke.
Regular bathing and ear cleaning is needed from their human caretakers since they have very oily skin and thus, tend to get dirty like a human who ran around without any clothing all the time would get.
Allergy sufferers, don't be fooled by this hairless breed. They are not any easier on your symptoms and can actually be worse than a cat with hair.
