The original place of origin for the Siamese cat is not precisely known. They are thought to be from somewhere in the South Eastern part of Asia, possibly Thailand.
In 1884, the breed was introduced for the first time outside of Asia and into Britain, by the British Council's General, Owen Gould. He gave the cat to his sister, Mrs. Veley (a founder of the Siamese Cat Club of 1901).
In the 1980's it was feared by many breeders that the "Traditional Siamese" with the apple shaped head, normal sized ears and a muscular medium build, would soon become extinct. Many judges of cat shows and breeders were beginning to prefer a more oriental looking cat. That is to say, a Siamese with a more slender, long legged body with more of a triangular head displaying very large ears. The Traditional Siamese began to lose popularity and no longer stood a chance before the judges in competitions.
The more popular cat organizations eventually even changed the official standards of the breed to match these highly favored traits.
Very few breeders continued to breed and register the Traditional Siamese but since they were still favored in certain circles, two types of Siamese became officially recognized; the Traditional/"Apple Head" and the modern day "show Siamese". In an attempt to increase the popularity and appreciation for the Traditional Siamese, breeders began to educate the public about its history and origin and aiding the public with the locating and purchasing of these cats.
Siamese kittens are all born a solid cream color or completely white. At about 1 month old, the kittens begin to develop points on their ears, muzzle, paws, tails legs and genitals on males. As a Siamese cat gets older, its coat will darken. Siamese which live in cooler regions have darker coats as well.
The Siamese personality, intelligence, loyalty and need for human affection and play time, has been compared to that of a dog. They are a highly intelligent breed and "in tune" with and acommodating to the desires of their human companions. They have been well known for their ability to be leash trained and learn dog like tricks like fetch, beg, sit, gimme paw and roll over.
Siamese are well known for their active, demanding nature including extremely loud and frequent meowing for attention. For this reason alone, it would be wise to have another cat in the house to keep them company, which thankfully, they tend to get along well with.
