The Munchkin breed was established in 1983 and its short legs are the result of a genetic mutation that was first discovered in Sandra Hochenedel's cat, "Blackberry", of Louisiana, who later gave birth to several short legged kittens. One of those kittens, "Tolouse", became the original stud who helped establish the new breed. Not all official feline associations accept the breed, in particular, one known as FIFe in europe.
Standard Munchkins have a normal gene from one parent and a Munchkin gene from another parent. As of today, there have been no kittens that have been born with and survived having two sets of munchkin genes.
It is possible for two munchkin parents to have all normal kittens, all munchkins or unfortunately, an entire litter of kittens that are aborted before birth or are stillborn.For this reason, it is best to breed a Munchkin with a non Munchkin cat. When this is done, the resulting kittens will be either all munchkins, a mix of normal and Munchkins or even all normal kittens.
