The Manx cat has its origins on the Isle of Man 200-300 years ago. The Manx's short tail is the result of a genetic mutation of the tailless dominant gene.
Not just any short tailed cat can be recognized as a Manx by official registering bodies. The cat has to show its origin from the Isle of Man with a pure line of succession.
It should be noted that Manx's tails come in all different lengths and some Manx cats can even be born with a full tail. Many breeders choose to dock stumpy or partial tails in an attempt to prevent a painful form of arthritis associated with the partial tail. No such problem has ever been reported for full tailed Manx cats on the Isle of Man. The practice of routine tail docking is becoming less common amongs breeders.
Manxes are similar to dogs in their playful, social personalities, enjoying a game of fetch and very smart. They are enjoy playing with and even in water as well as chasing eachother often. They are good with children, are almost as trainable as dogs with basic commands and are not very vocal.
Manxes have a long (cymric) or short haired double layered coat.
Manx syndrome is a serious condition to be aware of amongst tailless cats. In addition, it can be a deadly result to mate two completely tailless Manxes together.
