Bengals are a crossbreed of various selective domestic cats ie; Egyptian Maus, Ocicat, American Shorthairs, Bengals etc. and the Asian Leopard.
A bengal kitten with one of its parents being a pure Asian Leopard, is called an F1 Bengal or first filial. If one of these F1's are bred with a domestic cat, then their kittens will be F2 Bengals or "second filials" and so on.
Most breeders will not sell an F1, 2 or 3 Bengal(foundation cats) since their temperaments can be less affectionate, more reclusive and more difficult to house train. However, an F4 Bengal or higher, makes a very good house cat.
The F4 generation kittens and later, are 4 generations or more away from the original Asian Leopard and can be registered as SBT (Stud Book Tradition) Bengals.
The reason breeders decided to cross breed domesticated house cats with the Asian Leopard, was for the purpose of creating a well tempered, friendly cat that only looks wild. It is widely accepted that Jean Mill was the original breeder responsible for these cats in the 1970's.
: Bengals are known to get along very well with other cats and even dogs. They are also known for loving to play in and drink from running water, being very vocal on occassion, playing fetch, following their human caretakers around the house and wanting to somehow participate in whatever the human is doing.
Because of their high degree of intelligence, energy and curiosity and need for lots of attention/affection, they are not the cat for everyone. They can become depressed or react in jealous or spiteful ways towards other house pets if they do not get the type of interraction they need from their human companions.
: Because the Asian Leopard itself is actually a species made up of several subspecies, these wild cats can vary greatly in their appearance.
As a result, Bengals are either spotted or have a marble patterned coat. Rosettes in the coat are a highly appreciated pattern. Rosettes are spots with 2 or more colors, the lighter color being outlined by the darker.
The following coat patterns are accepted by TICA (The International Cat Assoc.) for showing purposes: brown marbled tabby, seal sepia marbled tabby, seal mink marbled tabby, seal marbled lynx point, silver, brown marbled tabby, brown spotted tabby, seal mink spotted tabby, seal spotted lynx point, and seal sepia spotted tabby.
There are also Melanistic(black) Bengals and Blue Bengals, however, they are not yet accepted by most Bengal associations. The Cat Fanciers Assoc. does not recognize the Bengal breed at all as a domestic cat.
