The Balinese cat is cat of oriental decent. They are known like the Siamese for their intelligence but unlike their Siamese ancestor, they are far less vocal. They were originally officially recognized as the "longhaired siamese" but Helen Smith of MerryMews Cattery in New York, changed the name to Balinese. She felt the former name was too long and did nothing to compliment their Balinese "dancer like" grace and beauty she seemed to believe they displayed in their movement and demeanor. There are two types of Balinese cats; the traditional or "apple headed" Balinese which looks very much like a Ragdoll cat; a very sturdy appearance, long hair, a fluffy tail and a slightly rounded muzzle. Then there is the contemporary type which looks very much like a Siamese, but with slightly longer hair and a plumed tail. Initially, these 'long haired Siamese' were seen as an occassional oddity amongst a litter of kittens. When two breeders who owned their own catteries, Marion Dorsey of the Rai Mar Cattery in California and the above mentioned Helen Smith, got together in the 50's with the same goal in mind, they started a breeding program that made this oddity the norm.
