The Abyssinian breed is believed to have its origin in Alexandria, Egypt from a kitten named Zula. A British soldier brought Zula to England and bred her with a tabby. One of the kittens who most resembled his Egyptian mother Zula, was mated with Zula in order to "breed in" and make the Abby gene and its characteristics, more dominant.
It is believed that the existing Abyssinians of the U.S., Europe, North and South America, and Australia are all decendants of Zula. One to three Abyssinians were brought into the U.S. from Libya as well and became a part of the original Abby gene pool in America.
Abbys are a very sought after cat in America. Their friendly, mischievious, active, playful dispositions, are a part of their charm. Not to mention, they have a beautiful, sleek, ticked tawny coat that also comes in the colors of blue, fawn, cinnamon and silver. There is also a long haired version of the Abby known as the Somali.
Abbysinians are highly intelligent and therefore very mentally active and prone to depression if they become bored from a lack of mental/emotional stimulation.
Because of their extremely independent nature, they do not make good lap cats for the elderly or cuddle cats for kids.
